What is Male Breast Reduction?
Men often develop excess skin, fat and breast tissue on their chests as a result of weight gain or loss, age, certain medications and due to hormonal imbalances. Many men are self-conscious of this feminizing appearance that does not respond to exercise.
If you are considering improvement in the appearance of your chest then male breast reduction may be for you. There are a variety of techniques that can be used depending upon the physical characteristics of your chest. The simplest techniques involve the use of liposuction. An additional surgical incision may be required to further reduce the tissue. Sometimes the nipples need to be repositioned as well. All men considering this procedure should have a full evaluation and physical examination with lab work by their primary care doctor to help identify the cause, if any, of the male breast tissue.
Male Breast Reduction Surgical Procedure
The procedure is performed as an outpatient usually under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Small incisions are created to perform liposuction and a separate incision usually at the bottom of the nipple may need to be created in order to remove remaining breast tissue. A compression vest is to be worn for about 4 weeks.
After Gynecomastia Surgery
You will up and about immediately, but you should refrain from heavy lifting for 4 weeks. Any discomfort you feel can be alleviated by the medication Dr. Ortega prescribes. You can return to your work usually in 3 to 4 days. Dr. Ortega will see you the day after the procedure and frequently thereafter to gauge your recovery and adjust your activity and exercise regimen accordingly.
