Just as in fashion, in the world of plastic surgery, trends come and go. A look back at the more popular procedures of the past years can give you a good idea of what people are hoping to get from cosmetic procedures and how standards of beauty and appearance have changed.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently released its annual procedural statistics for 2014 and the results might not surprise you if you’ve been paying attention to pop culture. One of the most popular procedures last year was butt augmentation. Surgery for men also remained popular, as did a number of non-surgical options, from injectables to laser treatments. In fact, there was 4 percent rise in minimally invasive procedures performed in 2014 than in 2013.
Botox, Xeomin and Dysport
It might not surprise you that the most popular non-surgical treatment in 2014 was botulinum toxin type A, better known by the brands names Dysport, Xeomin or Botox. Over 6 million injections were performed last year, up six percent from 2013.
Botox and similar injections have a number of benefits to offer patients. For one thing, it takes a lot less time and effort to receive an injection than it does to undergo surgery. Before surgery, a patient has to make changes to his or her lifestyle, make sure his or her health is in the best shape, and plan to take about a week off from work. If he or she doesn’t want a lot of people to know about the surgery, he or she will usually have to come up with a cover story to explain the time off from work and any bruising or bandages.
Dysport, Botox and Xeomin injections don’t require any time off from work. If there is any swelling or bruising, it’s usually mild and will fade quickly. The results from the injections are usually pretty subtle. Frown lines and crow’s feet do diminish, but if the injections are delivered by an experienced surgeon, the results look natural.
Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, Radiesse and Perlane, also became more popular in 2014. The number of fillers given increased by 3 percent, to 2.3 million injections, last year. Like Botox and its relatives, dermal fillers offer a number of benefits over surgery, including lower cost and no recovery time.
Fillers usually last longer than botulinum toxin injections and are used in different areas of the face. While Botox treats lines created by movement, Juvederm and other fillers treat static lines that form as the skin loses moisture and volume. Fillers also typically provide instant results, compared to Botox, which needs about a week before results are visible.
Laser Hair Removal
Procedures that create a younger looking appearance weren’t the only things that were popular last year. Another popular option was laser hair removal. The number laser hair removal treatments rose by three percent, to 1.1 million.
Laser hair removal uses energy from light to destroy unwanted hair follicles. Once the follicles are destroyed, the hair no longer grows and doesn’t grow back. The treatment can be a permanent hair removal option for many. But since the laser can only target actively growing follicles, in most cases, people need several treatments to get the long-lasting results they want.
The treatment isn’t effective on all types of hair, either. It’s the pigment in the hair that absorbs the energy from the laser, creating heat that destroys the follicle. Blonde, gray or white hairs don’t have the pigment needed to properly destroy the hair and won’t respond to laser hair removal in the right way.
Another popular minimally invasive treatment in 2014 was the chemical peel. 1.2 million peels were performed last year, up seven percent from the year before. Peels can help people with a variety of different skin issues. If you are starting to see fine lines or wrinkles, a chemical peel can help minimize them by removing the outer layer of dead skin cells and by encouraging new growth. A chemical peel can also minimize areas of discoloration or help reduce the appearance of some types of scars.
