Since there are so many minimally invasive or non-surgical anti-aging treatments available out there, it’s easy to assume that surgeries such as the facelift have gone the way of the dinosaur. While an injectable filler or treatment such are laser skin resurfacing can be beneficial to you depending on where you are in the aging process, in some cases you just can’t beat the benefits of a facelift.
A facelift does usually require a good amount of downtime and can be pretty expensive. Before you decide to have surgery performed, make sure you understand the benefits of it and what it can do for you.
Lifts Sagging Skin
Injections such as Botox or fillers such as Juvederm are designed to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Treatments such as laser skin resurfacing smooth out your skin, reducing sun spots or areas of rough texture. But, neither injections nor skin resurfacing can fix the sagginess that occurs as your skin loses its elasticity. Only a facelift can do that, by tightening both the muscles and the skin in the facial area.
The facelift also looks at your face as a whole. An injection focuses on one specific area, whether it’s the lines between your brows or the lines on the sides of your mouth. When you decide to get a facelift, your surgeon might also recommend a complementary procedure, such as a brow lift or neck lift, so that you look rejuvenated all over.
A Number of Options
Facelift surgery isn’t a one-size-fits-all project. The size of the incisions made depends on how loose your skin is and how much adjustment you need. In some cases, your surgeon may focus on the midface or he may focus on the jowls. If you also have a good amount of sagging in the neck area, your surgeon may perform a facelift and necklift together. The same is true if you have droopiness or wrinkling at the top of the face. While a facelift focuses on the lower portion of your face, a surgery such as a brow lift or eyelid lift can focus on the top of the face.
Botox injections wear off after three months and need to be repeated. The results from most fillers wear after six months to two years. Only surgery can provide long lasting results, in some cases for longer than a decade. A study from 2012 found that the majority, 76 percent, of patients who had had a facelift still looked younger more than five years after the surgery. Although you will look younger, longer after a facelift, it’s important to remember that the surgery won’t fully stop the aging process.
Increased Self Esteem
Deciding to have a facelift can really do a lot to improve your self esteem and self confidence. A 2013 study of more than 500 patients in Europe found that the people who had plastic surgery and who had gone into the surgery with realistic expectations, reported greater amounts of self esteem, as well as an overall feeling of being healthier and more attractive than patients who had considered surgery but ultimately decided against it.
Can Be Cost Effective
Although a facelift does cost more upfront than less invasive options and is usually not covered by insurance, it some cases it can be the more cost effective option than Botox or fillers. You’ll have to pay for the surgery, as well as a number of fees, with average cost being more than $6,500 before fees. But, if your results last for a decade or more, that will be the only cost you need to worry about for that amount of time. Meanwhile, the cost of injections can continue to add up, as you’ll need to pay several hundred dollars each time you get one.
